= Electronic Publication. EPUB is a standard format based on XML with which digital books (e-books) are saved. EPUB documents can be opened using reader software on various reading devices, e-book readers, Tablet PCs or local computers.

Advantages for mobile devices

Because the structure and the contents are set in the EPUB file, but not the layout, the appearance of a book can be adapted to different screen sizes. Therefore, the EPUB is particularly suitable for use with mobile devices. Newer EPUB versions also allow for fixed layouts.

Hyperlinks, images and the playback of multimedia files, such as video or and audio are also supported.
