Edge computing

Edge computing refers to computer-aided acquisition and computing processes that are performed decentrally on devices or machines, i.e. at the edge of the network. The storage and computing capacities are provided within sensors or mobile devices, such as smartphones or Tablet PCs and thus relieve central data centers.

Precondition for the Internet of Things

Edge computing will be a prerequisite for the widespread use of Internet of Things, since enormous amounts of data have to be transported and processed in real time. Relevant data is pre-filtered at the point of collection and only then transferred to applications in networks, for example via cloud computing.
